How it all started

Joyce Chong was born on July 1, 1991, in Haarlem, The Netherlands. She took an interest in sports at an early age. However, it wasn’t until the age of 13 she started playing golf. The first great shot- every golfer remembers the feeling of their first solid iron shot. Joyce was 13 when she had her first golf lesson at Golfbaan Spaarnwoude under the instruction of one of the most successful golf coaches, Ad Wessels. Wessels, who was named coach of the year in 2012, accompanied Joyce from the very first beginning, from amateur to professional. Under Wessels’ expert training and professional advice, Joyce reached a handicap of 4 within two years of playing golf and was elected for the Dutch National Team.

After graduating with a European Baccalaureate from the International School of Bergen, at the age of 18, Joyce decided to continue her exciting journey and pursued an international study. The perfect place that combined both top-sports and education was America. Joyce spent 4 years at the University of Nevada playing college golf in the first division amongst the best amateurs in the world.

Joyce is a young, independent, and ambitious woman with a clear vision of life. Some of her accomplishments allowed her to be featured as Golfer of the Week by the Golf Magazine and Western Athletic and Golfer of the Month by Verizon. With set determination, persistence, and strong will, she works continuously on her career towards a bright future. Over time, her avid sense of drive and passion in golf has transformed her into a true athlete.

Golf has taught me a lot and changed my life. It opened doors that I would never have dreamed of approaching, and also helped me to understand that sport can truly transform people’s lives, and bring them confidence and hope for the future. This is why I am committed in promoting sport for social good. I aspire to keep enhancing life prospects of socially vulnerable women and girls through sport, wherever tension and conflicts divide nations; sport can bring women and girls together where everything else divides them.

I have specifically chosen the topic “gender equality” because it is very close to my heart. Yearly, my team and I volunteer together in response to the Dutch refugee crisis to give back to the society. Golf has given me a voice and I want to carry my message of gender equality through sport around the world.
